How to Teach Children to Surf the Web
The Internet provides a world of information right at your fingertips. Learning how to surf the internet has become essential for kids and adults. From doing research for school or work, to shopping, to surfing for leisure the Internet is a huge part of our daily lives. When teaching kids how to use the Internet, it's important to teach them how to navigate safely. Knowing how to safely surf the Net will help kids avoid falling victim to potential dangers such as Internet predators, identity theft, malicious software or obscene material.

Talk to your kids about Internet safety. Explain potential dangers such as chatting with strangers, inappropriate Web content or downloading harmful files. Teach them to never give out personal information such as name, address or telephone numbers. Encourage your kids to tell you about any inappropriate material or behavior they may encounter online.

Help your child create screen names and passwords that don't contain potentially identifiable information such as name, age, school or location. Speak to them about approved websites they can visit. Install parental control software to monitor your child's Internet activity. Windows 7 has its own Parental Control features to help keep children safe online.

Use kid-friendly search engines such as Yahoo! Kids, KidsClick! or KidsKonnect.com. Kid-friendly search engines filter content, contain limited advertisements and are often organized by subject area.

Surf the Internet with your child. This can help you to spend quality time together while also showing them fun and safe things to do online. Play online games, research hobbies or activities your child is interested in, listen to music or watch videos together.

Make sure your child knows and understands your rules for their Internet use. Develop an Internet safety agreement that outlines rules and guidelines for Internet use. Keep it next to the computer so your child can refer to it as needed.
