How to Import Each Sample to Its Own Group in Kontakt

The sampling software Kontakt uses groups to sort samples within an instrument. When you apply an effect to a group, it only affects the samples within that group, leaving the rest of the samples in the instrument unaltered. Importing each sample into its own group allows you to, for example, apply a reverb effect to the cymbals without affecting the kick drum, or modulate the volume of one synth sample with an LFO while leaving the other samples unaffected.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Kontakt. Double-click inside the "Multi Rack" pane to create a new instrument. Click the wrench icon in the instrument to reveal its controls.

    • 2

Click the "Mapping Editor" button. Click the "Files" tab. Navigate to the first sample you want to use in Kontakt and drag-and-drop it into the Mapping Editor pane. Repeat the process for the other samples you want to use; do not overlap the sample zones in the Mapping Editor pane.

    • 3

Press "Ctrl" and "A" simultaneously to select all of the samples. Right-click the Mapping Editor pane and click "Move each zone to its own group (empty)." Kontakt creates a new group for each sample and moves the samples into the groups.

    • 4

Click and drag the sample zones in the Mapping Editor window to adjust them as necessary. You can now overlap sample zones; even if two samples overlap, they will stay in their own groups.
