Royal icing dries to a hard, smooth finish, giving handmade cookies an elegant look. The icing, which is made with a mixture of egg whites or meringue powder, powdered sugar and lemon juice, is ideal for topping holiday cut-out cookies.   • Baking sheet (optional)
  • Plastic food storage container with an airtight lid
  • Wax or freezer paper
  • Storage label

Instructions

      Arrange a single layer of iced cookies on a baking sheet and place them in a freezer for two hours, or until they are frozen. Omit this step if you plan to store the cookies in a refrigerator.

      Place a layer of iced cookies on the bottom of a plastic food storage container.

      Cover the first layer of cookies with wax or freezer paper and arrange the second layer of cookies on top of it. Continue layering the paper and the cookies until you reach the top of the container.

      Cover the container with an airtight lid to prevent the cookies from drying out. Label the container with the cookies' storage date.

      Store the cookies in a refrigerator for five to seven days. Freeze the cookies at 0 degrees Fahrenheit for three months.
