Instructions

    • 1

Shave extra hair off the sides of your head with a hair clipper. Decide how much hair you would like to keep on your head to achieve the look. Guards on the clippers start at a one - which is nearly bald - and go up to a six or higher in slight increments. If you want the hair as close to bald as possible, skip the guard entirely. Line the hair up with your nose and eyebrows to keep it center. Short strokes work the best, as most people tend to veer slightly when attempting to make long, straight lines. Working from front to back, or against the grain works best.

    • 2

Wash your hair with shampoo to make your hair easier to work with. Dry it off with a towel.

    • 3

Shape one section of hair into a spike. Put hair glue or gel into the spike starting from the bottom and working it up into the top. Make sure there is enough hair product to keep the spike nice and stiff.

    • 4

Blow dry the spike slowly. Make sure you dry it for at least 30 seconds so it's completely dry.

    • 5

Dye the spikes if you'd like using boxed hair dye products, or spray-on temporary solutions. Some have success mixing powdered drink mixes with water and applying them to their hair for bold colors. To do this, mix the drink mix with water and just enough conditioner to form a paste. Apply to your hair. Cover the hair with a plastic bag and leave the mix on overnight. The longer you leave it on, the bolder the color. Wash it out in the morning.

    • 6

Apply hairspray to the spike to make sure it stands up as straight as you like.

    • 7

Repeat the process for the rest of your hair.

    • 8

Apply more spray or gel if needed to fix spikes if droopy.

Tips & Warnings

  • White school-type glue and clear gelatin make great alternatives to hair gel for the longer spikes.
