How to Crack Oats
Anyone who enjoys oats can find them as steel cut, rolled, groats and instant. You can eat them as hot cereal or bake them into dozens of recipes. Oats are healthy for you, too, as they are rich in high-quality, protein, B vitamins, calcium and fiber. When you want to bake up some oatmeal cookies or a batch of multigrain bread, using freshly cracked oats can provide a tasty twist to your recipes. Does this Spark an idea?

Purchase several pounds of oat groats, or however many you think you'll need. You can buy them in bulk at whole grain food stores and many grocery stores.

Measure out 1/2 cup of oats into a clean glass blender. Turn the blender onto high and run it for short bursts. You can also pulse it several times. Avoid letting it grind into powder -- which may happen if you keep the blender running for too long. Don't leave it unattended or you may return to flour.

Place the cracked oats into your storage container. Measure out another 1/2 cup and repeat until you've cracked all that you need. Store them all in your pantry or kitchen cabinet until needed for your cooking and baking recipes.

Tips & Warnings
Coffee grinders or food mills may also be used; experiment to see what results you prefer. The blades need to be quite sharp and the apparatus needs a high speed.
You can try using more oats, but less than a cup is probably wisest. The same blender technique works with wheat and other grains.
Make sure the lid is on tightly or you'll have cracked pieces of oat flying everywhere.
