How to Disable a Webcam on a MacBook

The iSight webcam is built into most modern-day MacBooks. One of the problems with having a built-in webcam is that if someone hacks your computer, he can turn on your iSight webcam and watch you do whatever it is you're doing. To get around this, you have two options. The simplest option is to simply tape a piece of paper over top of the webcam to block it from receiving an image. The other option is to disable the iSight webcam by moving a file it needs to run.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the terminal and enter in the following text:

      "mkdir /System/Library/QuickTime/.iSightBackup"

    • 2

Enter the following text into the terminal:

      "mv /System/Library/QuickTime/QuickTimeUSBVDCDIgitizer.component /System/Library/QuickTime/.iSightBackup/"

This moves one of the iSight's essential files into a different directory, preventing the webcam from being accessed.

Open iChat or Skype to test to make sure your webcam isn't working. If you've done this properly, you should receive an error message telling you your webcam is in use by another program.
