How to Crochet a Mew

How to Crochet a Mew thumbnail
You can crochet an amigurumi version of any character with the right materials and pattern.

Mew is a cat-like character from the Pokemon game that is popular for its cuteness. The character looks very much like a regular cartoon cat, but pink, with a bulbous end on the tail, long back feet and unique eyes. To crochet a toy version of this character, you can modify a standard cat amigurumi pattern to have the unique color and features of Mew. Crocheting your own amigurumi Mew toy is a great way to make a gift for the Pokemon fan in your life.

Instructions

  1. Head

Wrap a loose loop of yarn around your hand with the loose end going behind the working yarn. Use your hook to pull the working yarn under and up over the loose end of the yarn, then chain one tight stitch. Work six single crochets over the loop, then pull the loose end of the yarn to tighten the circle until there is no center hole. This is called the "magic circle" method of crocheting in the round.

    Finishing the Piece

    • 25

Pin the pieces together to test the fit. Consult the picture of Mew at the Animetion website to verify the angle of the head, arms, legs and tail. Adjust the placement of the pieces as necessary and pin them into place with straight pins. Sew the pieces on with a tapestry needle and some of the same yarn you used to construct the piece.

    • 26

Cut out two wide teardrop shapes each of the blue and white felt, making the white teardrops larger than the blue ones. These will be the eyes for your Mew.

    • 27

Sew the blue teardrops onto the white ones, with the points going in the same direction and the widest part of the shapes lining up. Use thread that matches the color of the blue.

    • 28

Sew the finished eyes to the face of your Mew using the sewing needle and white thread, staying close to the edges of the eyes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adjust the pattern as desired to make a smaller or larger piece. You can use a smaller or larger hook to change the size of the entire piece, or you can remove rounds from the long portion of the tail to make a shorter tail.

  • See the original pattern on the Wolf Dreamer website for pictures and help working the pattern.

  • Be sure to not crochet your stitches too loose or tight, as the stuffing will show through between the stitches.
