How to Make a Cigar Box Handbag

How to Make a Cigar Box Handbag thumbnail
Decorate cigar boxes to make one-of-kind purses.

Cigar boxes are designed to protect cigars from the elements. Transform an empty cigar box into a handbag that can protect your wallet, keys, and other personal items. Decorate the exterior with pictures or fabric. The one-of-a-kind creation expresses your own personality or makes a great gift for friends and family. Use wooden cigar boxes for making handbags. They are sturdier than the cardboard boxes.

Instructions

    • 1

Use nail polish remover to take off any decals or artwork on the cigar box, unless you plan to incorporate them in your design. Let the nail polish remover sit for a few seconds and scrape off with a paint scraper. Use sandpaper to smooth the exterior of the cigar box.

    • 2

Measure all sides of the box. Cut out pictures or select fabric to cover the box, following the measurements. Glue pictures or fabric to the box, trimming to fit as you go. Do not glue over the clasp. Allow the glue to dry.

    • 3

Center the drawer pull handle over the clasp. Screw it into place. Hammer the end of the screw flat once it is in place; this will keep any sharp point from catching on your clothes.

    • 4

Measure the interior sides and bottom. Cutting pieces to fit, use felt to cover the inside of the cigar box using a hot glue gun. The felt will protect the interior from nicks and spills as well as decrease the amount of noise your items make.

Coat the entire exterior of the box with a clear spray varnish, following manufacturer directions. Allow it to dry thoroughly before use.
