How to Randomize Expression in After Effects

After Effects is a powerful digital video compositing application developed by Adobe Systems that utilizes a layering system and a large variety of effects plug-ins. Individual parameters and settings within each effect alter the way that layers appear within the composition time line. Effects parameters are modified by changing numerical values within the Effect Controls window, but expressions are also used to determine how effects behave. Dynamic and realistic effects are created by utilizing randomized expressions within a layer.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on a layer within the composition time line to set it as the active layer.

    • 2

Click "Effect" on the main After Effects tool bar and select "Effect Controls."

    • 3

Locate the effect parameter that you want to modify within the Effect Controls window to the left of the Composition Preview window.

    • 4

Hold down the "Alt" key and click the stopwatch icon next to the effect parameter to open the expression entry field.

    • 5

Type "Random(x,y)" (without quotation marks) into the expression entry field, replacing any text that was previously stored.

    • 6

Replace the "x" and "y" entries with your desired numerical values. The "x" value determines the lower boundary of the random expression, and the "y" value determines the upper boundary of the random expression. The overall value of the expression will randomly fluctuate between these two boundaries.

    • 7

Click on an empty area within the composition time line to close the expression entry field.
