How to Complain About a Legal Office Administrator in North Carolina

How to Complain About a Legal Office Administrator in North Carolina thumbnail
If a legal office administrator in North Carolina is not properly doing her job, you should speak with the attorney in charge.

You hired a North Carolina lawyer only to discover his legal office administrator is less than impressive. You are dissatisfied with the service she has provided and want to complain. Because she is not actually an attorney, the North Carolina State Bar will only be helpful if she is overcharging you. However, you can take the matter to her boss, the attorney over the law office. Gather your facts, keep your cool and present your complaint. If the attorney refuses to help, file a complaint against the law office with the North Carolina Better Business Bureau in your area.

Instructions

Have a sit down meeting. Contact the legal office administrator and arrange to have a sit down meeting to discuss the matter face to face. Keep your cool and stick to the facts. Calmly explain your side of the problem and what you would like to see happen to get the matter resolved. Listen to what the administrator has to say, and be open to the other side of the issue.

Speak with the boss. Contact the legal office administrator's supervisor, most likely the attorney who owns the office. Explain specifically the problem you have encountered. Offer possible resolutions to the matter. Prepare a typed statement of facts regarding the matter so you do not leave anything out. Be calm and professional as you provide your grievance.

File a complaint. If you believe the legal office administrator has charged you an exorbitant fee or you are due a refund for work not completed, file a complaint with the North Carolina State Bar. The complaint will actually be against the law office where the administrator is employed. A form is available on the state bar's website (see Resources). Provide your contact information, as well as the attorney's name and address, the type of legal matter for which you hired the attorney, how long you were represented, any fee agreement you signed and specific details about your complaint. Mail your complaint to the Attorney Client Assistance Program, North Carolina State Bar, Post Office Box 25908, Raleigh, NC 27611.

Contact the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Go to the North Carolina BBB website for the agency nearest you. Access a complaint form and detail specifically the problem that occurred. Again, your complaint will technically be against the law office, but you can note the legal administrator in your complaint information.
