How to Text With the HTC Evo

The HTC Evo 4G is an Android smartphone with a built-in messaging application that allows you to send and receive text and picture messages. The Evo 4G lacks a hardware keyboard, but you can enter a text message by typing on a virtual keyboard on the phone's touchscreen or by speaking into the phone's microphone. Text messaging is a convenient way to communicate with other people, especially if those people have cellphones or wireless service plans that do not include email or Internet access.

Instructions

    • 1

Touch the arrow in the lower-left corner of your Evo's home screen to open the "All apps" menu, and then tap the "Messages" icon to open the text messaging application.

    • 2

Tap "New message" on the "All messages" screen to compose a new message.

    • 3

Tap inside the "To" field, and then type the phone number you want to send a message to. To type numbers on the on-screen keyboard, tap the "12#" button to the right of the period key. Instead of typing a phone number, you can also type the name of a contact stored on your Evo. A list of matching contacts will appear under the "To" field, and you can tap the contact you want to send a message to.

    • 4

Tap inside the "Tap to compose" field, and then type your message using the on-screen keyboard. If you want to speak your message instead of typing it, tap the microphone icon to the left of the comma key, and then say your message out loud when your Evo displays a "Speak now" message.

    • 5

Tap the "Send" button in the right side of the "Tap to compose" box.

Tips & Warnings

  • To add additional recipients to your message, tap the "To" field after you enter the first recipient.

  • Each text message is limited to 160 characters. If you type more than 160 characters in the "Tap to compose" field, your message will be broken up and sent as multiple messages.
