Fax machines come in a variety of makes and models, and boast high-tech features. Caller ID is useful when you own a fax machine. Companies solicit via fax, wasting your paper and ink. If you know the phone numbers that companies use, you can block them, and stop the solicitation, leaving your fax machine open for important business. Some older fax machines may need to be updated to ensure caller ID works properly.

Instructions

1. Call your phone company to make sure that caller ID is enabled on the phone line that connects to your machine. Some companies may give you the caller ID but require additional steps to activate it.

2. Search online for updates to your fax machine software. Caller ID features are constantly changing, therefore your fax machine may not be up to date with these changes. Visit your fax manufacturer's site online to find information on your make and model. Install any updates.

3. Reinstall your fax modem driver. When files are corrupted, features such as caller ID may stop working. The key is to fix these corrupt files to restore full function to your machine.

4. Reset your fax machine. Instructions vary among makes and models. Read your instruction manual carefully, and follow the reset instructions in the order they are given. If you do not do this, you may have to restart the process.

5. Check your screen to ensure it is working properly. Most fax machines have LED screens. These screens can go out, making you think that your caller ID is not working when in fact it is. Contact your fax machine manufacturer to purchase a new screen if yours is not working.
