Veterans can request a copy of their VA award letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Disabled veterans may qualify for reduced home loans and reduced property taxes as a reward for their service and sacrifice. But to get these benefits, you will need to prove that you are disabled and that your disability is service related. The most widely accepted proof is a copy of your "Certification Of Permanent And Total Disability," commonly called a "VA award letter." This letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) shows your level of disability and the amount of your monthly benefits. You should have gotten one when you first started receiving benefits. If you misplaced yours, you can request another copy.

Instructions

    • 1

Call the Department of Veterans Affairs at 800-827-1000. Press "1" to indicate you have a touch-tone telephone, then press "1" and "0" to speak to a live representative. You may have to wait on hold for several minutes, but eventually someone will answer the line.

    • 2

Tell the representative that you need a copy of your "Certification Of Permanent And Total Disability", VA Form 21-0172.

    • 3

Give the representative your name and other information he needs to verify your identity. Also, make sure that the VA has your current mailing address.

    • 4

Call back to check on the status of your request if you have not received the copy within two weeks. It should take about four to 10 days to receive your copy.
