How to Choose a Skutt Kiln
Pottery and ceramics are made by manipulating raw clay into a desirable object. The clay is then dried and fired in a kiln to remove the remaining moisture. A Skutt kiln is one choice in kiln models. The octagon-shaped kiln allows for the addition of ring layers to increase height, which makes the firing chamber larger.

Speak with an owner of a ceramics business and ask to watch them load the kiln with greenware and with glazed items. The loading process is different so note the amount of room available for firing both types of items. Ask the interior dimensions of the kiln to note for future reference.

Select a location for kiln placement that leaves a minimum of 2 feet around all sides for clearance.

Check the electrical service and wiring to the Skutt kiln's desired location. A 240VAC breaker should be dedicated solely for use of the kiln, along with 220 wiring.

Check the description of the fire brick thickness. Firebrick is normally 2 1/2- to 3-inches in a Skutt kiln with the 3-inch fire brick taking longer to cool down, but being more economical to use. Determine which size fire brick is best for your situation.

Ask questions and look at the control panel on the outside of the new Skutt kiln. An excellent program pad is one that allows you to set the firing times, start the kiln and walk away.

Locate an area with good ventilation to place the kiln. A large kiln may require fresh air ventilation to remove the chemicals produced during the firing process. Ask about the kiln's need for outside air ventilation.
