How to Make LimeWire Stop Taking Torrents

With LimeWire, you can download files that are stored in another LimeWire user's computer, but you can also download torrents. While LimeWire is not optimized for processing torrent files the way that dedicated torrent clients are, it can serve as a handy replacement for one that isn't available. Dedicated torrent clients such as Vuze and µTorrent are designed solely for the purpose of downloading torrents. If you do not want to process torrent files with LimeWire at all, set your preferences in LimeWire to prevent this.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start," All Programs" and then "LimeWire."

    • 2

Click the "LimeWire" entry to start the program.

    • 3

Click "Tools," "Options" and then "Advanced."

    • 4

Scroll down the list located on the left side of the "Options" dialog box and then click "File Associations."

    • 5

Click the ".torrent" check box to deselect it. Click "OK," and then click "Yes" to confirm the change.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you ever decide to use LimeWire as your primary torrent client again, you can simply click the "Restore Defaults" button located in the "Options" dialog box.

  • Vuze, µTorrent and most other dedicated torrent clients are free and are generally best at handling torrent files.
