How to Soundproof a Bell

How to Soundproof a Bell thumbnail
Bells need soundproofing from time to time.

Bells are used to make sounds when they are moved or shaken, but sometimes a bell is located where the noise it makes can be an annoyance. Some places use a bell to notify the occupants that someone is at the front door or as an alarm in case intruders break in, but in some situations, bells need to be soundproofed.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the clapper on the bell. The clapper is the ball on the end of the rod inside of the bell that strikes the inside of the bell and causes it to ring.

    • 2

Determine how many cotton balls that will be needed to cover the sides of the clapper. Cotton balls will act as a buffer in between the clapper and the inside of the bell. This will drastically reduce the sound the bell makes. A small bell (apple-sized and smaller) should only require one cotton ball for coverage. The larger the clapper is, the more cotton balls will be needed to cover the sides of it.

    • 3

Tear off a piece of duct tape that is two inches long. Hold the cotton ball covering the clapper. Place the duct tape over the cotton ball and attach each end of the tape to the clapper rod. The tape should make a u-shape with both ends stuck to the clapper rod and the cotton ball-covered clapper resting in the bottom inside curve of the u-shape.

    • 4

Shake the bell to make sure the clapper cannot make contact with the bell's inner surface.

Tips & Warnings

  • The cotton ball can be stretched out to cover more surface area.

  • The duct tape can be torn by hand rather than cut with scissors.

  • Some large bells, such as church bells, will need to have their clappers wrapped in a large amount of fabric or foam.
