How to Crochet a Toddler's Hat With Earflaps

Crocheted toddler hats with earflaps have many uses. They offer the child warmth in the cold months, but are also stylish. Creating your own hat gives you the opportunity to customize the colors, stripes and ties. With a few supplies, you will save money by crocheting your own toddler hat with earflaps.

Things You'll Need

• 2 skeins yarn, different colors
• Size G crochet hook
• Scissors

Instructions

Crochet the Hat

1. Start crocheting with the secondary color of the hat. The second color will be used to create stripes, edging and the ties on the earflaps.

2. Chain four. Slip stitch to join.

3. Chain one to begin the first row. Crochet 12 half-double crochets. Slip stitch to join.

4. Turn your work. Chain one. Create two double half-crochets in the first 11 half-double crochets.

5. Add the primary color of yarn onto the crochet hook, along with the secondary color. Create a final double half-crochet, using both colors of yarn. Drop the secondary color from your hook and continue to work with the primary color. Slip stitch to join.

6. Turn your work. Chain one. Create a half-double crochet in each of the first two half-double crochets. Create two half-double crochets in the third previous half-double crochet. Repeat eight times to finish the third row. Slip stitch to join.

7. Turn your work. Crochet a single chain. Create three half-double crochets. Double half-crochet twice in the fourth half-double crochet. Repeat eight times. Change yarn colors on the last stitch in the row. Slip stitch to join.

8. Turn your work. Crochet a single chain. Create four half-double crochets, and two half-double crochets on the fifth half-double crochet. Repeat eight times. Slip stitch to join.

9. Turn your work. Crochet a single chain. Create five half-double crochets, and two half-double crochets on the sixth half-double crochet. Repeat eight times. Change yarn colors on the last stitch. Slip stitch to join.

10. Turn your work. Crochet a single chain. Half-double crochet in each stitch from previous row. Slip stitch to join.

11. Turn your work. Crochet a single chain. Half-double crochet in each stitch from previous row. Change yarn colors on the last stitch in the row. Slip stitch to join.

12. Turn your work. Crochet a single chain. Half-double crochet in each stitch from previous row. Slip stitch to join.

13. Turn your work. Crochet a single chain. Half-double crochet in each stitch from previous row. Change yarn colors on the last stitch in the row. Slip stitch to join.

14. Turn your work. Crochet a single chain. Half-double crochet in each stitch from previous row. Slip stitch to join. Repeat four times to complete 15 rows. Tie and cut off the yarn.

Crochet the Earflaps

1. Find the area on the back of the hat where your rows are joined. Count seven half-double crochet stitches to the side. Use the primary color and start your first row for the earflap in this stitch. Chain one. Create a half-double crochet to join to hat. Half-double crochet 10 stitches.

2. Turn your work. Crochet a single chain. Make one half-double crochet in each stitch from previous row.

3. Turn your work. Crochet a single chain. Join the first two stitches together to decrease a stitch. Half-double crochet seven stitches. Decrease a stitch.

4. Turn your work. Crochet a single chain. Half-double crochet in each stitch from previous row.

5. Turn your work. Crochet a single chain. Decrease a stitch. Half-double crochet five. Decrease a stitch.

6. Turn your work. Crochet a single chain. Decrease a stitch. Half-double crochet three. Decrease a stitch.

7. Turn your work. Crochet a single chain. Decrease a stitch. Half-double crochet one. Decrease a stitch. Tie off and cut the yarn.

8. Count seven stitches to the opposite side from the joining seam at the back of the hat. Repeat the process to make a second, identical earflap.

Crochet Ties and Edging

1. Find the joining seam on the back of your hat. Chain one with the secondary color. Single crochet around the side of the hat.

2. Single crochet along the side of the earflap. Chain 20 off the bottom point of the earflap to create a tie.

3. Turn your work. Create a single chain in the second stitch from the hook. Single chain the length of the tie.

4. Single crochet along the earflap and around the hat. Repeat the process for the second earflap, creating a second tie.

5. Slip stitch to join work in the back of the hat. Tie off the yarn and cut. Weave the tail of the yarn into the stitches.
