How to Know a Salesman Is Lying
Salesmen by nature are a group that invokes skepticism, but most consumers don't know how to expose those who express deceit. Body language and knowledge of your product are the two most important keys you have in telling whether a salesman is lying to you. Watching the salesman's body language and listening to what he says about a product you have thoroughly researched will help you determine whether he is telling you the truth.

Read about the product you are buying so you'll know its specifications in detail. You'll know about the reviews it has received and the different sales prices at different stores or from different dealers. Listen to whether the salesman tells you something different about the specifications of a product instead of telling you outright that he does not know and will find out for you when you ask a question about them.

Watch the salesman's eyes. Too much eye contact can indicate that the salesman is not telling the truth. Contrary to popular belief, avoiding eye contact is not a tell-tale sign that someone is lying. Many liars take advantage of the misconception that eye contact is a requirement for telling the truth.

Look for a salesman licking his lips, placing a physical object as a barrier between you, holding his hands palm up during the conversation and scratching behind his ear. Also look for him touching his nose or collar bone. These actions by themselves are likely just subconscious actions or fidgeting. However, doing several during the course of your conversation indicates a strong possibility he is being deceitful.

Talk to other salesmen about the product before you decide to buy from a particular one. If all of the salesmen are telling you the same thing about the product, the chances are that the one that tells you something different about it without evidence is lying.
