How to Upload to SkyDrive

SkyDrive is a Microsoft website where you can store and share your personal documents, links and photos online. When uploading to SkyDrive with Windows Live Mesh, you get up to 5 GB of storage space for free; when uploading directly on the SkyDrive website, you get an additional 25 GB of free space. To upload files to Windows SkyDrive, you must have a Windows Live ID; to use Windows Live Mesh, you must be running Windows Vista or Windows 7.

  1. Using Windows Live Mesh

      Go to the Windows Live website and download Windows Live Mesh (see Resources). Start the installation program, then click "Choose the programs you want to install." Select "Windows Live Mesh" and click "Install."

      Click the "Start" button. Type "Live Mesh" in the Start Search box, then select "Windows Live Mesh" from the list of programs.

      Click "Sync a folder." Select the folder you'd like to upload to SkyDrive, then click "Sync." Choose "SkyDrive synced storage," then click "OK."

      Navigate to devices.live.com, then click "SkyDrive Synced Storage" to access the files you've uploaded.

    Uploading to SkyDrive Online

      Log in to the Windows Live Skydrive website (see Resources) with your Windows Live ID. Click "Add files."

      Select a folder, or click "New Folder" to create another folder. Type a name for your new folder and click "Next." Check the files you'd like to upload to ensure they're 50 MB or smaller.

      Select a file to upload. Hold down "Ctrl" and click to select multiple files. Click and drag the files into the window to add them to the upload queue. Wait for the green bars to fill completely and disappear. Click "Continue."

Tips & Warnings

  • You can access your SkyDrive files from any computer using your Windows Live ID username and password.

  • On the Windows Live SkyDrive site, you can upload your documents, favorites and photos to separate areas.

  • Windows Live Mesh must be on and running to upload your files to SkyDrive.

  • Whenever you change a file to be synced, Windows Live Mesh uploads the new version of the file to SkyDrive.

  • To make your folders private on SkyDrive, you must change the sharing permissions. Click a folder, then click "Share" and "Edit Permissions." Select "Me" at the bottom to prevent others from seeing the files in your Windows Skydrive folders, then click "Save."
