How to Remove Thin-set Mortar From Cement

Thin-set mortar, or thin-set cement, dry-bond mortar or dry-set mortar, is created by mixing fine sand, cement and a substance that allows the mixture to become moist, according to The Council of North America, Inc. The mortar is used to adhere and set tiles, both inside and outside the home. Before a renovation project is started on a cement surface, the existing thin-set mortar must be removed to allow any new tiling to adhere properly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wet down the affected area with water. If the thin-set is on an exterior portion of the structure, use a garden hose. Otherwise, pour water over the area, using a small bucket.

    • 2

Begin chipping away at the thin-set with a pan scraper or floor scraper, which is available at hardware and home improvement stores. Start at any of the corners and work your way toward the center of the project area.

    • 3

Chip away at the thin-set until the majority of the larger chunks have been removed. Sweep up these large chunks and dispose of them in a sturdy garbage bag or dumpster. This will give you an idea as to how many of the smaller chunks of thin-set remain.

    • 4

Remove any remaining smaller pieces of thin-set, using a hammer and chisel. Set the flat end of the chisel under the piece of thin-set, and hit the other end with a hammer to remove it.

    • 5

Sweep the floor again and examine the area. If there are still any smaller pieces left, remove them with the hammer and chisel as well.

    • 6

Vacuum the area with a wet/dry vac. This will remove any remaining tiny pieces and dust created by the removal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Rent a jackhammer with a chisel point, a hammer drill or a pneumatic chipper if there is a large area covered by unwanted thin-set. These tools are available to rent at home improvement and hardware stores.

  • Wear a respirator, safety goggles and work gloves while removing the thin-set to protect yourself from any dust and fine particulates that are created.
