How Teenagers Can Handle Bullies
Bullying is serious problem in schools across the United States. Teenagers who become the target of bullies suffer emotional, mental and often physical abuse at the hands of their tormentors if the situation isn't handled quickly and appropriately. In order to defend against bullying, teenagers need to know how to handle a potential bullying situation before one arises. Through a variety of strategies, teens can protect themselves from the actions of bullies.

1
Tell an adult who is in a position of authority. If bullying happens at school or with a school mate, a student should tell his teacher or administrator. Teens also should inform their parents of what is going on. If there are threats of violence, teens need to contact law enforcement as well.

2
Control your emotions, anger and reaction when faced with a bully. Bullies want to illicit a reaction from you. If you immediately give in by becoming upset, you are losing the battle. Reacting with physical violence can potentially trigger a dangerous situation in which you or the bully could be seriously injured.

3
Ignore the bully if possible. If the bully continues to harass you (and you can't get to an adult right at that moment) address the situation with calmness and confidence. Say, "What you're doing isn't helping either of us, and I choose not to respond." You might even want to use humor to diffuse the situation. Walk away as soon as possible.

4
Surround yourself with friends. This is important for your emotional support. It's also important in terms of physical safety. Doing certain activities alone, such as walking home from school, can make you more vulnerable to a bully.

5
Seek help from a guidance counselor or other professional counselor if you need to sort through your thoughts and feelings. Being bullied can trigger intense emotions, and you may benefit from the input of a counselor who can help you to work through these feelings.
