Step-by-Step How to Draw a Sparrow
The sparrow is one of the most welcome visitors to gardens and, despite their diminutive size, have a reputation for boldness. Sparrows are common throughout the Northern Hemisphere, and many artists will have the advantage of being able to draw them by just looking out of a window at home. House sparrows will often be seen during harsh winters, and are helped through these winters by food supplied by humans. Draw a male house sparrow in profile by following a few steps.

1
Start by sketching an outline of the sparrow's body, beginning from its head down to its slightly fanned tail. Move round to sketch the outline of the wing and then roughly sketch the outline of the sparrow's belly, chest and throat up to its head with one flowing curve.
-
2
Focus on sketching the accurate positioning of the feet, and note how they are aligned with the rest of the sparrow's body. Sketch the bend at the top of the nearest leg.

3
Begin your sparrow drawing by shading in its tail, and by drawing the lines making up the tail's fanned appearance in greater detail. Shade in the wing, beginning from the wing's tip and work upwards. Note that on the wing there is the appearance of two irregular white stripes, so leave this area of your drawing blank, and shade around them.
-
4
Shade in the belly, chest and throat area of the sparrow. This is mostly white, so the shading should be light overall, and be darkest just above the legs. Add very dark shading to the left upper part of the sparrow's chest and throat, and up to its beak.
-
5
Draw the beak in sharper detail. Use darker shading at the ends of the beak, and lighter inside. Shade in the top part of the sparrow's head, with a light shade that stretches from its forehead to its neck.
-
6
Include the white stripe around the eye area, and shade in the eye. Leave the side of the sparrow's face blank, apart from some light shading. The back of the sparrow's head should be shaded in with dark shading.
-
7
Finish your drawing of the sparrow by depicting its legs. Pay attention to the way that the claws on the feet curve, and also shade in the very thin legs carefully.

Tips & Warnings
Observe how curved the sparrow's body is, and always bear this in mind during the drawing.
Shading will be important to get right when drawing a sparrow. It will be the one thing that helps to distinguish a male from a female.
