How to Pour the Perfect Pint

While there is no way to know exactly when beer was first brewed, it is probable that it occured somewhere around the time of the first grains were domesticated and cultivated grains (estimated to be 8,000 B.C.). Since those early days, however, beer brewing has been refined and broken down into a science. Much like the exacting nature of those brewing the beer, many admirers of the beverage take great care in achieving a perfect poured pint of the brew. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Select a clean, dry pint-size glass.

    • 2

Grasp the glass firmly with one hand and place the glass under the tap.

    • 3

Hold the glass about an inch below the spout and at a 45-degree angle.

    • 4

Turn on the tap with your free hand and allow the beer to pour into the glass.

    • 5

As the beer reaches the edge of the glass, bring the glass to level and continue pouring until the beer reaches the top. Serve or enjoy immediately. If you are pouring Guinness, stop the pour about an inch from full and set aside.

    • 6

Allow the Guinness to rest for a few minutes. Guinness and other stouts have nitrogen gas bubbles that cloud the beer as they rise to the top to create the thick, foamy head. When the liquid turns from a murky dark brown to near black, it is ready to be topped off.

    • 7

Hold the glass upright under the spigot and open a the tap to a small stream. Fill the glass just to the point that the head rises above the rim into a foam dome. Serve or enjoy immediately.
