Step-by-Step on How to Draw Cats & Kittens

Drawing cats and kittens is a process that requires many similar techniques. The principle difference in drawing cats versus kittens lies in the proportion of the features to the body. By drawing these elements proportionally, and by following a step-by-step process, you can draw cats or kittens using many of the same techniques to create both.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a circle for the cat or kitten's head. This circles will work for a cat or kitten. The details and proportions added to this circle will determine the difference between a cat or kitten. For an older cat, draw two almond shapes with the inner corners angling slightly toward the top of the face to form the eyes. For a kitten, draw the eyes more rounded. Draw narrow vertical lines inside the eyes for pupils. These vertical lines can be wider or even small circles if you're drawing a kitten.

    • 2

Draw ears onto the cat or kitten. The size of the ears in proportion to the face will determine whether you draw a cat or kitten. Draw triangle shapes for the ears. For a kitten, make the ears slightly large in proportion to the head. For a cat, the ears will be smaller and appear more in proportion.

    • 3

Draw two vertical lines beginning just below the eyes and centered between them. Extend these two lines toward the bottom of the face to form the bridge of the nose. End these lines with an upside down triangle and two small, dark circles for nostrils for the nose. Draw two small lines extending from the bottom of the nose and curving slightly toward each side of the cat's face to form the mouth. Draw a small tongue extending from one corner of this mouth for a tongue, which can give help enhance the look of a kitten.

    • 4

Shade your cat for a furry look. Angle your pencil as you shade the fur on. Keep the lines light and continue to shade until the lines fully overlap and color the cat's face. Draw five or six vertical lines on each side of the mouth for whiskers. Draw two half moon shapes, one on each side of the mouth area, to give the mouth some dimension.
