Crochet a chic newsboy hat in a yarn color that coordinates with your outfits.

Crocheted newsboy hats are useful accessories. The main hat body keeps the wearer's head warm and protected from the sun. The brim at the front of the hat shades the wearer's eyes from too much sunlight. Crochet your own newsboy hat using a few basic crocheting techniques. Use cotton yarn to create a summer hat or a warmer wool yarn for winter wear. The finished project should fit most adolescent and adult sizes and can stretch to fit larger heads.

Instructions

    • 1

Create two chain stitches by making a slipknot in the yarn and placing it on the crochet hook. Grab the yarn with the hook's tip, pull it through the knot's loop and drop the loop from the hook. A new loop should remain. You have made the first chain stitch. Grab the yarn again and draw it through the new loop and drop it from the hook to make the second chain stitch. You should have one loop on your hook.

    • 2

Make six single crochet stitches into the first chain stitch. Make each single crochet stitch by inserting the hook into the stitch, catching the yarn, drawing the yarn through the stitch and bringing a new loop onto the hook. Catch the yarn again and draw it through both loops as you drop them off the hook.

    • 3

Spread the six single crochet stitches into a circle. Place the stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round.

    • 4

Make two single crochet stitches into each of the six stitches in the first round. On the next round, make one single crochet stitch into the first stitch and two single crochet stitches into the second stitch, then repeat the pattern to complete the round. On the next round, make one single crochet stitches into the first two stitches and two single crochet stitches into the third stitch, repeating the pattern to complete the round.

    • 5

Continue increasing the number of single crochet stitches between increase stitches until you finish the round with seven single crochet stitches between increases.

    • 6

Make one single crochet stitch into each stitch of each round until the cap measures 8 inches from top to bottom.

    • 7

Make one single crochet stitch into the first 30 stitches of the next round. Make one chain stitch and turn the work around.

    • 8

Skip the first stitch of the row of 30 worked stitches. Make one single crochet stitch into each stitch until you come to the second to last stitch of the row. Make a slip stitch by inserting the hook into the stitch, catching the yarn and drawing it through the stitch and the loop on the hook, dropping the loop in the process. A new loop should remain. Make one chain stitch to finish the row. Turn the work around.

    • 9

Repeat Step 8 for nine more rows. Then cut the yarn and draw it through the last loop. Use the tapestry needle to weave in the loose ends.
