How to Query the Storage Size of Disk Drives

How to Query the Storage Size of Disk Drives thumbnail
Determine your disk drive's total capacity.

To store data on your disk drive, you need to divide it into partitions, also called "volumes" in Microsoft utilities. However, part or all of the storage space available on the disk may be unassigned to any existing partition. Some operating system utilities operate exclusively on individual partitions. You can use other built-in operating system tools to find out the total amount of storage available on the disk, regardless of its current partitioning status.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to the computer as Administrator.

    • 2

Click "Start," type "run" into the search box, then click on the "Run" link. Type "diskmgmt.msc" on the text field and press "Enter." The Disk Management utility opens in a new window.

    • 3

Locate the disk drive whose size you need to query in the lower half of the Disk Management window; this section contains all storage devices detected by the operating system.

    • 4

Read the storage size of the drive from the third line of text in the first column of the drive's table entry -- for example, "150 GB." That is the size of your disk.
