A SKU, or Stock Keeping Unit, is a specific number that retail stores give to products, separate from the UPC barcode. SKUs at Target are nine numbers long and represent a set of specific categories. Their specific SKU numbers are known as DPCI, or DePartment Class and Item numbers. By setting up Target's inventory in this manner, it categorizes items into specific categories, helping keep stock organized. You can find a SKU or DCPI number through Target either online or in person.

Online

Go to Target.com.

Type the SKU number into the search box at the top of the page.

Click the magnifying glass icon to search for your item. A new window will come up with the product matching that DPCI number.

Click on the item. A pop-up window will appear with details about the item.

Scroll your mouse to the bottom right-hand corner of the new window and look for "View Full Details." Click on it. The item will come up in its own window. Scroll through the web page of the item for cost, shipping information and if it's available online or in store.

Click the "Shipping and Additional Information" tab, located below the item for specific information, including the DPCI number which will be hyphenated.

In Person

Write down the DPCI number, whether you got it from the web site or from a Target receipt. The DPCI number is located to the left of the each item listed. It will be a nine-digit number, not hyphenated.

Go to customer service with the DPCI number.

Ask the sales associate to do a computer look up of the DPCI number that you have written down. The associate will be able to look up the number and tell you where the item is located, if it is available in store.
