How to Make a Parenthesis on Facebook Without It Turning Into a Smiley Face

Facebook Chat is a feature in Facebook that allows you to send instant messages to any of your friends currently viewing Facebook. You can create graphical smiley faces in Facebook Chat by inserting emoticons into your messages using a series of keyboard keys. However, Facebook sometimes automatically transforms parenthesis in your Facebook Chat messages into a graphical emoticon, even when you do not want it to. You can prevent this by avoiding inserting any of the recognized graphical emoticons into your messages.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to your Facebook account and open the "Chat" tab in the bottom right corner of your Facebook page.

    • 2

Select a contact to send a message to and click on the contact to open a new message window.

    • 3

Type out your message. Ensure that your message does not contain any of the following symbols or set of symbols:

      :)

      =)

      :-)

      :(

      =(

      :-(

      8)

      8-)

      B)

      B-)

      O:)

      3:)

      >:-(

      >:(

      ;)

      ;-)

      :'(

      (^^^)

      <(")

Facebook only transforms parenthesis into smiley face emoticons when they appear in one of the above sequences, and are not adjacent to any other letters, numbers or symbols.
