How to Sync the iPhone Over WiFi

The traditional way to sync an iPhone involves hooking it up to a USB cable and plugging it into a computer that has iTunes on it. If you take the right steps, you can also sync your iPhone over a Wi-Fi network. As of the time of publication, you can buy an application for an "unlocked" or "jailbroken" iPhone to make this possible. In the near future, Apple is releasing this as a standard feature of the new operating system.

Instructions

  1. Using Wi-Fi Sync Application

    • 1

Jailbreak your iPhone. This involves unlocking your iPhone with a software program and by completing a series of steps. It can be complicated, but it is required before you can use the Wi-Fi Sync capability.

    • 2

Visit the Cydia store at http://cydia.saurik.com/store/ and purchase the Wi-Fi Sync application. The application costs $9.99.

    • 3

Download the free application for your computer from the developer's website at http://getwifisync.com/. You will need this application installed on your computer before you can use the Wi-Fi sync application.

    • 4

Run the application on your iPhone once it is installed. At that point, it will sync the information on your iPhone with the information on your iTunes account saved on your computer.

    Apple Operating System Update

    • 5

Download the update for the iOS 5 software when it becomes available in 2011. This software update has more than 200 features, one of which is Wi-Fi Sync. To download the software update, hook your iPhone up to your computer with the USB cable and sync it to iTunes.

    • 6

Plug your phone in for charging. The Wi-Fi sync capability is designed to automatically start syncing when you plug your phone in to charge.

    • 7

Allow the iPhone to finish syncing before using it again. This will sync all of your videos, movies and songs without having to plug in the device to your computer.
