How to Make My HughesNet Connection Better

A small satellite dish on your home can provide you with high-speed Internet.

Satellite Internet service, such as HughesNet, operates in the same way that your satellite television does. A satellite far above the Earth emits the Internet signals, which are received by your satellite dish. The satellite dish then transfers the signal through a cable to your Internet modem. The data transfers back and forth in this manner. Because of the distance the signal travels, satellite Internet is typically slower than other types of broadband connections. However, there are ways through which you can improve your connection speeds.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your diagnostic program for your Internet connection to check the aim of your satellite dish. Choose a clear day to test your strength as clouds and storms can affect your signal strength. You can also set the program to notify you of any disruptions.

    • 2

Check to ensure that nothing is blocking your satellite dish. For instance, you may find that you have speed issues in the spring and summer and have good speed in the fall and winter. This could be the result of a tree blocking the view of the satellite. Trim back any trees that are in the way and remove any other obstacles if possible. If you cannot move an obstacle, choose a different location for your dish.

    • 3

Use the Internet in off-peak hours. These hours are usually late at night and early in the morning. The fewer people using the network, the faster your speeds.

    • 4

Limit your downloads. HughesNet allows each account 200 MB of downloads per day. Once you reach this amount, your service slows down until the next day. Keeping under your download limit keeps your connection running faster.

    • 5

Use the customer care portion of the HughesNet website to configure your computer to help it utilize the HughesNet connection more efficiently. If your computer is configured incorrectly, your connection speed may be considerably lower than its potential.

Tips & Warnings

  • Contact HughesNet if you are consistently having problems with your service. They can help you troubleshoot any other problems that may be causing speed issues.
