How to Make Text Animation in Adobe After Effects

The "Text" tool in Adobe After Effects allows users to create and place text over footage and other media. Along with the preset text, a sub-menu allows users to instantly create animations. Animate one factor like opacity or expand the animation to include scale, rotation and other factors. Once animated, you can integrate other graphics, effects and text to make the full experience. Use text animations with any version of Adobe After effects after version 5.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a new composition with the "Icon" in the project window. Name the composition "Text" or "Text Animation" and press "OK."

    • 2

Right click in the "Comp Window" and go to "New" and select "Text." A text layer will appear in the window and a blank text box will appear in the "Monitor" window.

    • 3

Type in the text that you want to animate. Use the "Text Editor" tab on the right side to adjust the font, size and settings you want the final text to appear as.

    • 4

Drag the text to the area on the screen you want it in.

    • 5

Click on the arrow next to the text layer in the "Comp" window to expand the settings. Click on the small "Animate" icon and a list of animations will load.

    • 6

Select the type of animation you want to display. The options include "Scale," "Rotation," "Opacity" and "Skew." Select one of these properties to apply it to the text. It will appear underneath the settings in the "Comp" window.

    • 7

Set the effect to "0%." Expand the "Range Selector" sub-menu and you will see settings for "Start," "End" and "Offset."

    • 8

Set the "Offset" value to "0%" and click on the "Key Frame" icon. Drag the timeline navigator to the end of the clip and set the value to "100%."

    • 9

Click on the "Render Preview" icon. The video will render and the text animation will play.

    • 10

Click on the "Animate Icon" to add extra animations to the text. Use the "Color" select to transform the color of the text.

Tips & Warnings

  • Play around with different settings to see how they all effect the text. The more you play and preview the text, the faster you will master and manipulate text animations.
