How to Install a Prefab Pond

To install a pre-fabricated pond in any landscape design requires only that you excavate an area and set the pond into place. The cost of a liner depends on the material from which it is made and it's important for you to know the various features your pond has so you find one that suits your needs. Look for ponds with a UV stabilizer to stand up to sun exposure, and if you plan to include fish in the pond, it must be labeled "fish safe." Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place the pond upside down in the desired area. With chalk powder, draw the outline of the pond onto the soil to act as a guideline for excavation.

    • 2

Dig out the required area, depending on the depth of the pond, with a shovel. Add 1 to 2 inches to the depth measurements to accommodate a sand layer, which you will add before installing the pond. Dig the area a couple inches wider to ensure the pond will fit adequately.

    • 3

Spread a uniform, 1-inch layer of sand into the excavated area to provide stabilization for the pond. Use a tamper to firm up the soil for the liner. Before you install the liner, double-check that there are no jagged stones in the excavation site, which could put a hole in the liner.

    • 4

Position the pre-fabricated liner into the hole and check the edges with a level to make sure it is even. Begin to fill the pond only halfway with water to allow the liner to settle and take shape in the hole.

    • 5

Fill open areas around the liner with soil and use a tamper to firm the surface. Fill up the rest of the pond with water to complete the project.
