How to Make an Emerald Necklace

How to Make an Emerald Necklace thumbnail
Emeralds are one of the most popular gemstones for jewelry.

Dorothy said, "We're not in Kansas anymore," when seeing the emerald city of Oz, and you can give your loved one the same stunned experience by presenting her with an emerald necklace. Emeralds are rare green gems that are harder to find than fine diamonds. They are the birthstone of the month of May. Instead of buying a piece that is already set, save money by making the emerald necklace yourself. Gold wire and a few tools are all you need to give that special someone a treasure she'll cherish for years to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the end of the gold wire using flat-nose pliers and bend a tight, circular loop around the base of the emerald.

    • 2

Wrap the perimeter of the emerald with the gold wire three times. Stop wrapping after you reach the top of the stone on your third wrap. The emerald should be secure.

    • 3

Pull the gold wire two inches from the top of the emerald and cut the excess wire with a wire cutter. File the end of the cut wire.

    • 4

Bend the end of the gold wire to the top of the emerald with the flat-nose pliers, making a 1-inch loop.

    • 5

Hold another length of gold wire with pliers. Wrap this wire in a tight spiral around the 1-inch loop so that it looks like a noose. Start from the bottom of the loop, wrapping to the middle until the loop opening is approximately 1/2 inch. Cut the wire and file. Squeeze the end of the gold wire to the middle of the 1/2-inch loop using flat-nose pliers.

    • 6

Insert a gold necklace into the opening of the loop. Your emerald necklace is now ready to be worn.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear goggles when cutting gold wire. Pieces of gold wire are sharp enough to damage the eye.
