Add a customized monogram to a simple gift for dad.

You can go beyond the ordinary and customize a special Father's Day gift by adding a monogram or personalized design to a store-bought tie. Turn a regular unadorned tie into festive Christmas apparel by embroidering snowflakes, Christmas trees or other decorations onto the tie. Instructions

    • 1

Use a seam ripper to open up approximately 8 inches of the seam on the back of the tie. Remove the tag and loop if necessary. Open the folded fabric and press with an iron to minimize the creases.

    • 2

Cut a square of tracing paper and place it on the section of the tie you would like to embroider to make sure it fits. Use a light-colored transfer paper for a dark-colored tie, or a dark-colored transfer paper for a light-colored tie.

    • 3

Prepare the image you would like to embroider. Print off the image or design from the computer, draw it by hand or stencil it onto a piece of paper.

    • 4

Place the image on top of the tracing paper, then pin the layers of paper to the tie. Trace over the image with a ballpoint pen, pressing firmly as you work to make sure the image transfers completely.

    • 5

Remove the image and tracing paper. Spray the back of the tie with a temporary adhesive, and press a piece of lightweight stabilizer against the tie.

    • 6

Thread one strand of embroidery floss through the needle and knot the ends together. Use two strands of floss for a thicker embroidery design.

    • 7

Thread the needle through the stabilizer and into the tie fabric. Stitch along the traced image and complete your stitching on the underside of the tie. Knot the floss, break off any excess and carefully cut and pull away the stabilizer.

    • 8

Fold the tie back into its proper shape and iron it to lay the fold lines flat. Reinsert stitches along the 8 inches of seam you removed earlier. Stitch only through the back layer of the tie, being careful not to sew any stitches through the front of the tie. Do the same to reattach the label and loop.
