How to Prune Dracaena Plants
Ornamental houseplants usually present an indoor gardener with many of the same growing issues that occur outdoors. Houseplants require pruning during the active growing season to stay healthy and attractive. Dracaena plants, a family of plants with striking green ribbon fronds and impressive size and height, grow energetically in a partly sunny or shady location. Prune dracaena plants periodically to keep them thriving. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Examine the dracaena plant in the spring or early summer when the plant begins actively growing again. Remove any leaves that appear brown or withering. Cut these leaves off with the pruning shears at the point where they originate and discard the leaves. If just the tips of the leaves appear brown, trim the leaves with the scissors to maintain the shape, removing only the brown portion of the leaves.

2
Trim back the tops of the canes to control the height of the plant, if you desire. Cut the stems back to any height you desire with the pruning shears and discard the growth you remove.

3
Determine points on the plant where you wish to make it appear fuller. Because the growing pattern of dracaena plants often results in plants with sparse lower halves and fuller top halves, cut back some stems so the ends of the stems will be on the bottom half of the plant. Cut these stems off at any point where you wish new growth, using the pruning shears, and discard the growth you remove. Watch for new stems to emerge from the cutting locations.
