Operating Instructions for an IBM Selectric II Typewriter

Operating Instructions for an IBM Selectric II Typewriter thumbnail
The IBM Selectric II has a QWERTY keyboard.

The IBM Selectric II electric typewriter was first introduced by IBM in 1971. Improvements over the previous Selectric model include "dual pitch" which allows typists to switch between 10 pitch or 12 pitch -- for smaller or larger letter sizing. It also uses a mylar ribbon on a cartridge that snaps in and out and lasts longer than the previous carbon type of ribbon. Like today's computer keyboards, typewriter keys are set up arranged according to the QWERTY system, making it easy for computer users to learn to use a typewriter.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug in the typewriter. Turn the typewriter on by pressing the top part of the control button switch on the right side to "On".

    • 2

Check that the typewriter has an "element" -- the ball that holds the font, in the top of the typewriter behind the ribbon cartridge. If not, install an element by lifting the lever at the top of the element and inserting it on the post, ensuring that the triangle on the element is pointed toward the platen, then release the lever.

    • 3

Set the margins by using the levers located above the keyboard. Push the left lever in and push it to the right until it reaches the desired setting then let it go (1.5 inches is the recommended setting for business letters). Repeat with the lever on the right, pushing it to the left to the desired setting and letting go.

    • 4

Pull the paper release lever forward. Insert a sheet of 8½ by 11 inch paper into the back of the roll, until it won't go any further, aligning the paper with the guide on the left. Press the "Index" button to advance the paper through to the front of the roll.

    • 5

Push the paper release lever back to hold the paper in place.

    • 6

Set the number of row spaces (one or two) using the line space lever at the top rear of the machine.

    • 7

With your fingers positioned on the middle row, begin typing by pressing one key at a time with deliberate, even pressure. Use the space bar at the bottom of the typewriter to create spaces between letters and words.

    • 8

When you reach the end of the row, or hear the margin bell "ding," press the "Return" key to bring the page back to the beginning. This will also advance the page up to the next row.

    • 9

Continue typing until you have reached the bottom of the page, then pull the paper release forward to release the paper and pull it out.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you make a mistake, apply correcting fluid over the incorrect letter, allow to dry and type over with the correct letter.
