Diversity can make for better patient care.

Promoting diversity in a workplace that centers around the care of others is important. Employees are more productive and maintain a healthier working environment in a hospital or office setting, where all individuals get along and are able to see past differences -- including race and gender. In care settings, the goal is to provide patients with respect, privacy and the best care possible. Promoting workplace diversity can make for a better patient experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Acknowledge that prejudices do exist. Identify areas where prejudices may be a problem -- such as age, religion or gender.

    • 2

Post diversity rules along with the punishments for rule violations. Post them in a back office or in a lunch room, so that all employees can see them.

    • 3

Obtain diversity training materials. Workshops, DVDs and literature can be effective in emphasizing diversity and promoting team building in your medical office, hospital or other facility.

    • 4

Hold events for your employees to get to know each other. Have a meal or a holiday party during a lunch hour, or on a slow day. Allow your employees to get to know each other beyond just discussing work-related issues.

    • 5

Provide employees with flexible hours. Care settings do not close for the weekend or a holiday. Offer flexible hours that allow employees to participate in their cultural and religious observances.

    • 6

Make changes to your work schedule. Avoid scheduling the same employees together all of the time. Mix the schedule up to allow different individuals to work together.

Tips & Warnings

  • To increase diversity in your care setting, expand your hiring techniques. Post jobs online, in newspapers, at community centers or set up a booth at a job fair. Use a number of different approaches to attract candidates of different backgrounds.
