How to Draw Manga Monsters Individually

Manga monsters carry a different connotation than monsters in other comic book genres. Instead of being scary and ugly, many of these creatures are cute. These critters help move the storylines along and act as companions to the main characters in manga comics. The simplest way to learn to draw these creatures individually is to use a method that many beginning artist use---by copying the artwork using a grid. This method allows you to learn to draw the shapes and details of the individual manga monsters while teaching you how to capture the lines of the character's form.

Instructions

    • 1

Look through several manga comics until you find a couple of the monsters you'd like to draw. The monster might appeal to you because of the shape of the body or because you like the character in the series.

    • 2

Make a photocopy of one of the comic panel in which your individual manga monster is featured. Blow the picture up so that it measures at least 8-inches by 10-inches. This allows you to see the details well enough to draw them.

    • 3

Draw a grid on the copy of the manga. Make grid squares that measure at least 1/2-inch by 1/2-inch.

    • 4

Use an "HB" pencil to draw a grid on your drawing paper that equals the measurements of the manga picture's grid. Include the same number of squares.

    • 5

Locate the grid square that has top of the manga monster's head on the picture; if he has horns, find that square. For example, the square is three squares down from the top and five squares in from the side.

    • 6

Search your paper until you find the square in the same position.

    • 7

Study the lines making up the manga monster's horns within the grid square. Notice how the lines of the horns curve within the grid square.

    • 8

Create a line drawing of the manga monster's horn within the grid square on your paper. Replicate the way the lines curve within the square in relation to the other lines. If you draw a line that doesn't quite curve right, draw it again until it looks like the lines making up the horn.

    • 9

Complete the drawing of your manga monster using the grid. Follow the same steps. Notice the lines within each square, drawing what you see. Pay attention to features like the manga monster's eyes, the fluffiness of his tail and the way he smiles. The more accurately you draw the lines making up these features, the more accurate your individual manga drawing will be.

    • 10

Erase the grid on your manga monster drawing.

    • 11

Color the manga monster using flat-tipped markers. Lay down a wash of color all over the body of the character. Add layers of shading by putting down a darker shade of the same color in the areas of the monster's body that have shading. If you're not sure, look at your reference picture to see where the light and dark areas are on the manga monster.
