How to Use an External Mic on an iPhone
The iPhone has a built-in microphone that allows you to record by speaking in close proximity to your phone. If you want to use an external microphone, you only have to go as far as the earbuds included with the device. The iPhone earbuds contain a built-in microphone, located on the click button that is attached to the left earbud cord.

Plug the earbuds into the headphone jack at the top of the device.

Open an application that you can use a microphone with, such as the iPhone's built-in Sound Recording app.

Speak into the tiny mic/button section of the earphones to use the external mic. This mic/button combination is located on the cord leading to your left earbud.

Tips & Warnings
When your iPhone's earbuds are plugged in, the your iPhone's built-in microphone will not record anything.
