Make a Harry Potter wand using craft materials.

If your child enjoys reading the Harry Potter book series, or watching Harry Potter movies, you can encourage an interest in magic and wizardry by giving your child her very own magic wand. Instead of buying a pre-made plastic magic wand from a toy store, make a Harry Potter wand yourself using natural materials that you can find around your house or purchase from an arts and crafts store.

Things You'll Need

  • Stick
  • Sandpaper, coarse
  • Sandpaper, fine

Instructions

    • 1

Select a stick that you want to use for the wand. Choose a stick that is about 12 inches long, although the stick can be as long or as short as you prefer. Pull off all of the twigs and leaves that may still be attached to the stick.

    • 2

Sand the stick using coarse-grain sandpaper for five minutes. Use small, circular motions with the sandpaper to remove the bark and smooth down nubs and splinters on the stick.

    • 3

Sand the stick using fine-grain sandpaper for an additional five minutes. Use small circular motions with the sandpaper, as before. This creates a slick, sleek surface on the stick.

    • 4

Wipe off the stick using a washcloth to remove any remaining sawdust caused by the sandpaper.

    • 5

Squeeze puff paint in lines around the stick, covering as much or as little of the stick as you like. Be creative; squeeze out the paint in patterns, such as swirls, spirals or branches. Allow the paint to dry for 30 minutes.

    • 6

Paint the entire wand using acrylic paint. Select metallic acrylic paint if you want the wand to appear to be constructed out of metal, or use brown or green-tinted acrylic paint if you want the wand to look more authentic. Allow the paint to dry for 30 minutes.

    • 7

Apply a coat of clear acrylic glaze over the entire wand, which will protect the paint and give the wand a glossy sheen. Allow the glaze to dry for 30 more minutes before using the wand.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep all paints out of the reach of children. Not all acrylic paints are non-toxic.
