Instructions for Homemade Resin Ring Molds
Resin that is used for handcrafted jewelry starts out as a liquid that hardens into a solid resin piece. The liquid resin mixture cannot hold a shape without a mold, as it is too thin to be hand-formed. Molds can be purchased or handmade, but the materials for the molds need to be compatible with the resin, otherwise the mold can warp or melt. Kneadable silicone offers a simple solution to making a mold with an existing ring.

1
Remove the resin from the container and knead it in your hands until it is warm and even in consistency. Depending on the brand you choose, the color may change to indicate that it is ready to use.
-
2
Rip off a few small pieces of the silicone and stuff them into the opening of an existing ring that is the size and shape you want for your resin mold.

-
3
Rip off more pieces of silicone and layer them over the silicone that is in the center of the ring and the sides around it. Once covered properly, you should only see one side of the ring, as if it were inserted, flat, into the silicone.
-
4
Place the silicone and ring, ring side up, onto a sheet of wax paper and press down gently to create a flat bottom surface, so the mold will stay still when in use.
-
5
Leave the ring in place for the amount of time recommended by the silicone instructions and then remove it.
