When you decorate cakes and other desserts with frosting and icing, you can experiment with a wide array of decorative techniques. For instance, weaving is a form of frosting the edges and borders of cakes that gives the frosting a lattice-work appearance. Instructions

    • 1

Sit the pre-frosted cake in front of you on a cake platter. The cake should be chilled for about an hour before weaving frosting onto it.

    • 2

Fill the piping bag with your choice of frosting. Attach a tip to your piping bag that corresponds with the size of weave you want. There are fine tips and wide tips. Some are shaped like stars, hearts and other whimsical designs.

    • 3

Hold the tip of the piping bag about 3 inches from the top edge of the cake. Squeeze the bag to begin a line of frosting. Squeeze the line of frosting all the way around the top bordering edge of the cake.

    • 4

Make another line around the cake about 1/2 inch below the border line of frosting. Repeat this step for every 1/2 inch until you reach the plate, moving around the cake entirely.

    • 5

Aim the tip of the piping bag toward the first line of frosting at the top edge of the cake. Create a wavy line of frosting over the top of this line. Repeat this step over each line of frosting around the cake.

    • 6

Repeat Step 5, moving in the opposite direction as before. This completes the look of a weaved, or braided, texture of frosting around the edges and sides of the cake.
