How to Do an Auto Repair on a Laptop
Microsoft has made it easy to do an auto repair on a laptop through its online "Fix it" tool. This tool is handy when your computer is not working correctly. Instead of just diagnosing, the tool will automatically repair many problems with your laptop. The tool is free but requires an Internet connection.

Shut down all applications and programs and launch a browser. Go to the "Fix it" site (see Resources).

Select the problem area, consisting of "Windows," "Internet Explorer," "Windows Media Player," "Entertainment" and "Office." You can also select "Top Solutions."

Highlight a topic in the "What are you trying to do?" area.

Click the "Run Now" button in the auto repair solution that pertains to your problem. If you are unsure about the solution, click the "Learn More" link below the "Run Now" button.

Click the "Save Now" button that appears in the dialog box. Click the .exe file that downloads onto your computer. The location of this file depends on where you designated your downloads to reside. Follow the prompts of the tool. This depends on the tool you are using.
