Fold a conch shell using a 6-inch square piece of paper.

Make a paper folded origami conch shell using the techniques of the Japanese ancient art of paper folding. Create the curl of the conch shell with a fan fold, a simple fold that many people learn in their primary years in school. To make the fan fold, fold one edge of the paper down a set distance, such as half an inch toward the front, then turning the paper over and folding the paper back the same distance. Continue this process until you've folded the complete length of the paper; it should look like a folded up fan.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the 6-inch square piece of paper on a flat surface so it forms a diamond shape. The diamond shape has a point of the paper at the top, bottom and both sides.

    • 2

Fold the top point down and match it to the bottom point. Crease along the fold firmly. Open the fold.

    • 3

Fold the upper right hand edge to the center fold line. Match the edge with the fold line. Crease along the fold firmly. Repeat the process with the upper left edge.

    • 4

Fold the bottom right edge up to match the outside right hand edge along its fold line. Crease along the fold firmly. Notice the point that extends past the edge to the left. Fold that point over the back of the paper and flush with the edge. Crease the fold firmly. An open end extends to the left and a pointed end extends to the right. This is the front of the paper conch shell.

Fan-fold the point to the right to create the curl on the conch shell. Fold the tip to the left 1/2 inch. Crease the fold. Flip the conch shell over, maintaining its position on the flat surface. Fold the tip to the left 1/2 inch. Repeat the flipping and folding process three more times. The last fold will be on the front side of the conch shell.

Pick up the conch shell and carefully pull the paper open on the left side approximately 2 inches to imitate the open end of the conch shell. Unfold the fan fold and bend it to the desired curl shape.
