How to Do a Feather Stitch-Chained

The feather chain stitch, sometimes called the feather stitch chained or chain feathered stitch, is a series of chain stitches worked into the fabric on an angle, between two invisible parallel lines. A row of feather chain stitches consists of a series of chain stitches and running stitches. The stitch is not difficult to master if you have an understanding of embroidery basics and are familiar with other chain stitches.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw two parallel lines on the piece of fabric, spaced 3/4-inch apart. The length of the lines should be equal.

    • 2

Center the fabric in the embroidery hoop. Tighten the tension screw until the outer circle is snug against the inner circle and fabric. Pull evenly on the edges of the fabric to make it taut.

    • 3

Cut an 18-inch length of embroidery floss. Separate the floss into six threads.

    • 4

Thread the embroidery needle with three strands of floss. Tie a knot in one end of the strands.

    • 5

Push the needle and thread up through the fabric, on the left side of the lower line. The knot will be on the back of the fabric. Pull the thread all the way through, until the knot pushes on the fabric.

    • 6

Hold the thread against the fabric on the front of the project and bring the needle back down through the same hole you came up. Pull on the needle so that the thread forms a loop. Do not pull the thread all the way back out.

    • 7

Push the needle up through the fabric again, between the two parallel lines, on a 45-degree angle from where you first came up. As you bring the needle up through the fabric, you'll catch the thread in a loop, forming a chain stitch.

    • 8

Bring the needle down through the fabric about 1/8-inch to the right directly across from where you just came up, to make a simple running or straight stitch. You've just made the first stitch on the feather stitch chain.

    • 9

Push the needle up through the fabric on the upper parallel line, about even with the position of the first stitch on the running stitch. Hold the thread against the fabric, then bring the needle down through the same hole, forming another loop of thread.

    • 10

Push the needle back up through the fabric at about the same spot as the end of the first running stitch, to form another chain stitch. Pull the thread up, then bring the needle down about 1/8-inch away from where you came up, to make another running stitch. You now have two feather chain stitches.

    • 11

Continue stitching in the same fashion across the length of the parallel lines.
