How to Create Textured Drawings

Drawing is usually thought of as a two-dimensional art, though contemporary artists sometimes now create textured drawing. You can create texture for your own drawing by using a high-viscosity additive, acrylic gel, commonly employed by professional artists. Acrylic gel keeps stiff peaks. It has no color when it dries. This way, you can lay out the texture, and draw right over it with markers or crayons. Make it even more interesting with a some gritty substances found around the home like sand or coffee grounds. The final result will have a more complicated surface than a flat drawing. Use a heavy paper; it stands up better to the gel.

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch out your subject with a pencil on the heavy paper. Outlines of the subject are fine to start.

    • 2

Mix your texture agent (if you are using one) in the container. Use around one ounce of texture agent per ounce of acrylic gel.

    • 3

Place you gel directly onto the drawing, using the plastic utensil. Lay it into areas where you want the texture. Use either the texture mixture or just the acrylic gel from the jar. You can use both in the textured drawing, should you wish. The mixture will have grit. This is good for recreating the feel of dirt or like substances. The gel will have a smoother surface.

    • 4

Manipulate the gel with the utensils. Push it around or dig into it to create peaks.

    • 5

Allow the gel to dry overnight.

    • 6

Draw over the drawing and textured areas. Use crayon or marker. Color in the texture, and add color or decorative elements to suit your vision.
