How to Install a Desktop Environment in Ubuntu Server 9.10

The Ubuntu system is a server-level, Linux-based operating system that is offered free of charge. The open source operating system, when installed, does not install a desktop environment. The command line interface is the only user interface available, and no desktop GUI is provided. However, installing the X Window desktop environment to the Ubuntu Server system is simple. Install X Window by running a command-line statement, then start the program and enjoy the ease and convenience of a desktop environment similar to Microsoft Windows.

Instructions

1. Boot the computer into the Ubuntu Server operating system. If Ubuntu Server is the only operating system installed, the machine will boot into Ubuntu Server by default. If you are on a dual-boot system, use the "Up" and "Down" arrows to select the "Ubuntu Server" option, then press the "Enter" key. The system will boot into Ubuntu Server, and show the Linux command line prompt.

2. Type the following command at the prompt and press the "Enter" key:

   sudo apt-get ubuntu-desktop

   A password prompt appears at the command line.

3. Type the Administrator password at the prompt, and press the "Enter" key. The X Window software is downloaded and installed to Ubuntu Server.

4. Type "startx" at the command prompt, and press "Enter" to start the desktop GUI.
