How Can I Get Windows Live Mail to Work With Vista 64 Bit?

Windows Live Mail is part of Microsoft's Windows Live Essentials suite of free add-on programs for Windows. Windows Live Mail is an updated version of the Windows Mail program included with Windows Vista. Windows Live Mail and other Windows Live programs support 64-bit versions of Windows Vista, although they don't support 64-bit versions of Windows XP. You can download and install Windows Live Mail and install it on a 64-bit editions of Windows Vista normally. If you have an older version of Windows Live Mail that doesn't work properly, you should uninstall it first.

      Uninstall any old versions of Windows Live Mail by clicking "Start," clicking "Control Panel," clicking "Programs," clicking "Programs and Features," selecting "Windows Live Essentials" in the list of installed programs and clicking "Uninstall." Click the "Remove" option in the uninstaller, select the programs you want to remove and click "Uninstall."

      Open the Windows Live Mail page at Explore.Live.com, then click the "Download Now" link on the Web page to download the newest installer.

      Start the downloaded installer by double-clicking the downloaded "Wlsetup-web.exe" file on your computer.

      Click "Continue" to the User Account Control prompt that appears.

      Click "Choose the Programs You Want to Install" on the "What Do You Want to Install?" screen.

      Click the checkboxes to the left of each program you want to install, making sure the "Mail" checkbox is enabled.

      Click the "Install" button. The Windows Live Essentials installer automatically downloads and installs the programs you selected.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can click "Install All of Windows Live Essentials" instead of "Choose the Porgrams You Want to Install" if you want to install every Windows Live program. Windows Live Essentials includes Photo Gallery, Movie Maker Messenger, Writer, Microsoft Silverlight and other utilities, including a Bing Web browser toolbar.

  • Open Windows Live Mail after it's installed by clicking "Start," selecting "All Programs" and clicking "Windows Live Mail" in the list of programs.
