How to Connect a Dishwasher to a Double Sink
The procedure for hooking up a dishwasher to a double sink isn't any different than that for hooking one up to a standard sink. Dishwasher drain hoses connect to sink drains through a piece of pipe called the tailpiece. This is the straight piece of pipe located next to the curved p-trap. Tailpieces have nipples on the side that make hooking up dishwasher drain hoses a snap. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Install a Dishwasher Tailpiece
-
1
Clear out the area beneath the double sink to give yourself plenty of room to work.
-
2
Place a bucket or other container underneath the p-trap, which is the curved portion of the drainpipe located beneath the sink.
-
-
3
Loosen the couplings on the ends of the p-trap with your hands, pliers or a plumbing wrench. Pull the p-trap out of the drain plumbing. Dump out all the water in the p-trap into the bucket.
-
4
Loosen the coupling connecting the tailpiece to the tee joint from the double sink drain above. Pull out the tailpiece.
-
5
Insert a dishwasher tailpiece into the double sink drainpipe. Slip the coupling over the end and tighten.
-
6
Insert the p-trap into the bottom of the dishwasher tailpiece and the sewer drainpipe. Tighten the couplings.
Connect the Dishwasher Drain Line
-
7
Determine the best route for the dishwasher drain hose to the double sink tailpiece. If this involves snaking the hose through cabinets, cut holes in the cabinets with a power drill and spade bit wide enough to fit the hose.
-
8
Run the drain hose through the cabinets over to the dishwasher tailpiece.
-
9
Slip the end of the drain hose over the nipple on the side of the dishwasher tailpiece. Secure with a hose clamp.
-
10
Fasten the middle portion of the drain hose to the nearest wall or cabinet so that it is higher than both the exit at the dishwasher and the connection on the dishwasher tail piece.
-
11
Run the dishwasher. Watch the drain hose as the appliance runs. Tighten the hose clamp if needed.
