How to Pump for a Jet Boat's Water System
Sometimes blockages will cause a jet boat's pump system to stop working properly. Cavitation can occur if the jet boat's water system pump becomes blocked. Although engine speed will rise, forward thrust and steering function will be affected and the pump will ultimately stop working. Weeds and debris are usually the cause. Operating the boat in debris-strewn water requires that you monitor this potential problem. Excess engine noise with low power is a sign of trouble. If pumping stops on a jet boat water system, you can fix the problem by clearing out debris. Once the debris is cleared, the pump should function properly again.

1
Remove the ignition key and lanyard and wait for all movement to stop. Then lift the hatch on the rear platform and verify that the retaining cord is attached to the cap and strap. Press the release button and lift the cap out.
-
2
Reach in and remove any weeds or debris from the drive shaft, impeller, pump housing and steering nozzle. Be careful because the impeller has sharp edges.
-
-
3
Clean off any sand from the cap and port surfaces and re-install the cap. Be careful to insert the cap. Look for arrows or slots lining up with projections. Then lock the cap in place with the handle. Replace the hatch.

4
Replace the ignition key and start the engine. The pump should now function normally. You should not hear excessive noise from the engine which would indicate strain caused by the blockage. Test the pump by operating the boat and verify steering and thrust function normally.
